I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHATS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HAN CHINESE AND MANCHU CHINESE?
Q. I always thought the hans were the ones that wore the ponytail but its actually the manchus. So who are the Hans? Where are the from? And how come there are more hans than manchus? In alot of chinese movies they use that ponytail.

A. The Manchus are a different ethnic group than the Hans which made up the dominant group of China. Generally, you may not be able to distinguish the physical difference between Hans and Manchus. But culturally that is a different matter. The ancestors of the Manchus were the Jins/Jurchens. They have been in China for a long time. They tried to conquer China but failed especially after they were conquered by the Mongols. Their descendants the manchus were finally able to conquer China and establish the Qing dynasty. The Manchus were closely associated with Han culture even though they were semi-nomadic people. They were themselves students of Han culture before they conquered China.
